Only 64 Percent Jakartans Gave Their Votes in Legislative Election

After working continuously for three days on April 23-25, Jakarta General Election Commission (KPU) finally declared that vote counts recapitulation completed on Friday (7/25) evening. Based on the results, there were only 4,503,788 people used their voting rights out of a total of 7,001,520 people listed in final voters list (DPT).

Indeed, our target is not achieved. But, we have done the best we could through socialization

That means, the participation of citizens in the legislative election only reaches 64.33 percent. That amount is far from KPU’s target of 75 percent. For information, that amount is also not too different than citizens’ participation in the 2012 legislative election which reached 64 percent.

Indeed, our target is not achieved. But, we have done the best we could through socialization,” stated Head of Jakarta KPU, Sumarno, Saturday (4/26).

According to him, citizens’ participation in election is never reaching 100 percent. Thus, the unachieved target is deemed quite rational, considering citizens nowadays are very critical and discerning in making choices.

Sumarno also acknowledged that Jakarta KPU has done socialization optimally to increase participation level in the election. However, it all depends on the citizens as well as the legislative candidates in conveying their visions and missions. Looking ahead to the presidential election which falls on upcoming July 9, Jakarta KPU is continuously holding socialization.

“We hope that citizens’ participation level in the upcoming presidential election could increase,” he expressed.

Moreover, Sumarno told there are many aspects that influenced the citizens’ political behavior, especially through the advanced technology. Regarding the socialization that has been done, it was conducted in form of holding face-to-face discussion, forming democratic volunteers to reach the voters, making posters, cooperating with disabled communities, nursing homes, and religious groups, as well as holding socialization on campus and schools.

And here are the results of vote counts recapitulation conducted by KPU from 4,503,788 voters:
